“adage” vessel ideation (2014), ©sourceadage

When designing our own line of home fragrances, we gave a lot of thought, naturally, to the various fragrance ingredients and scent inspirations that would define our brand from an olfactory standpoint but, as Creative Directors, Robert and I knew the importance of thoughtful packaging design to bring the brand to life.

One detail we were convinced of, above all, was the impact of having our own, proprietary vessel for our signature candles and reed diffusers. We were looking to create a luxury product so it seemed only fitting to go the extra mile with an object of decor vs. a standard jar or bottle.

Many sketches were penned. We discarded most and kept a few. We considered both form and function. Weighed trends vs. timeless design and how our vessel would mirror the character of our fragrances, the story we wanted to tell, and the audience it aimed to capture. Selfishly perhaps, we wanted something we could display proudly in our home or studio (not hide behind books!) and recognized a space in the market for what we envisioned. Likewise, our fragrances were destined to skew more masculine than most leaning towards woodsy, spicy, and herbaceous notes traditionally considered “masculine scents” instead of florals. That further informed our choice of material (black glass) and neo-classic character lines, eschewing flowery embellishments and patterns.

After the necessary process of renders and prototypes, we arrived at the final vessel that our luxe collection of candles and reed diffusers have become known for. The distinctive pieces are made of hand-pressed, heavy gauge black glass, through and through. The alternating straight and concave facets and sheer weight in hand provide a rewarding tactile feel that evokes luxury. The decagonal, shield-like design draws from 19th century architectural details and succeeds in conveying a heritage-esque vibe - A perfect fit for our newly-minted “elevated apothecary” brand!

Introducing, Elevated Apothecary

Christopher Draghi

6oz, matte white porcelain jars with lid/base

In the tradition of old-world apothecaries that we came to love living in Europe over the years, we have created six new scented candle fragrances that illustrate our approach to modern day apothecary and that meet the standard of quality our clients have come to expect of our brand. We are proud to introduce the Elevated Apothecary collection by source adage.

We hand-blend each fragrance using only pure essential oils to achieve distinct, natural scents rich in herb, spice, wood, fruit, and floral ingredients – including distillations of neroli, damask rose, geranium, ginger root, and even locally-grown cannabis CBD oil - each with its own unique wellness properties.

The apothecary candles are all hand-poured on premises in small batches using sustainable all-natural waxes with a pure cotton wick. The custom, Japanese teacup inspired jar is made of matte white porcelain with a lid that can be used as a base.

HUDSON 314 scented candles and reed diffuser

Introducing our new, reimagined HUDSON 314 ambient fragrance

With already a few years of living in Hudson as a guide, our vision for our HUDSON 314 fragrance has evolved. Our goal with the new scent was to add in more layers that go beyond the landscapes to represent the vibrant personality and rich history of the famous river town.

Still remaining are the natural notes inspired by Upstate like river grasses, orchard fruit, cedar, and oak moss. In addition, though, we've layered in aromatic wild herbs and sweet, resiny amber that give it both sharpness and warmth. Other than being a wonderfully rich fragrance ingredient, the addition of amber is a nod to Hudson's unique whaling history. The result is a fragrance of intermingling fruity, aromatic, and woodsy notes as intriguing as its namesake.

Available now as scented candles (2 sizes), reed diffuser and room spray.

The ART of Fragrance

Christopher Draghi

Earlier this year we received an offer we couldn't refuse...

We got a call from the assistant curator of public programs at the Williams College Museum of Art (wcma.williams.edu) to ask if we'd be interested in participating in their summer series, Osmotheque. Taking inspiration from the museum's impressive collection, we were to create olfactory compositions informed by works of our choosing and then present them at the museum. It was an easy "yes" to accept the offer - and quite an honor.

Robert and I visited the impressive museum for the first time shortly after to select the art works that would be the muse our creations. We purposefully chose four that represented different points of view, techniques and mediums to challenge ourselves to formulate distinct scent profiles. The artists and their works we selected were: George Inness'"Spirit of the Night", Robert Rauschenberg's"Booster", Meleko Mokgosi's"Lerato", and Edward Hopper's"Morning in a City" (the eponymous scented candle now available at the museum and at source adage).

On August 10th we presented the art-inspired fragrances in an auditorium setting with a brief introduction to the history of fragrances, the artists and their works, and our process in developing these particular scents. We then invited the audience to explore the galleries where they would find our creations, with each single fragrance component, beside the artworks. It proved to be a powerful method to illustrate how individual notes are layered to create a final composition - much like mediums in fine art.

The Inness landscape was the most literal interpretation as a fragrance. The painting itself is very atmospheric which immediately evokes the smells of smoke, earth, wood, grass and a balmy, thick air. Woodland notes of fallen leaves, fertile earth, aromatic wood and smoke would be the pillars of this scent.

Rauschenberg's conceptual visuals and use of mixed mediums proved to be more challenging compared to the Inness, Hopper or even Mokgosi. Still we were intrigued and let the materials inform the scent we were to compose. Ink, paper, film (X-rays), carbon all inspired a "chemical slant" to our fragrance. Here, we experimented with synthetics which seemed appropriate in capturing a detached, almost antiseptic feeling that we found in Rauschenberg's works.

In Mokgosi's work, although depicting the daily life and/or allegories of a culture that was foreign to us - literally, the shear emotional response from his "Lerato" (Love) diptych would lead us to use lush, woodsy and resin notes with just a bit of floral sweetness that spoke to the work's theme.

Hopper's painting, "Morning in a City", was more of a psychoanalytic exercise. His technique and composition renders the environments eerily still as if the oxygen was sucked out of the room. Yet, with the still figure, lost in thought, you can't help but try to assess her state of mind, what she is about to do, or has just completed. The cool, damp feeling of the room vs. the warmth of the outside world, the pale skin vs. the fiery hair. It's both serene and dynamic simultaneously. Our fragrance aimed to capture a sweet seductiveness contrasted by a slight bitter sharpness with the notes we blended. This one you can judge for yourself if we achieved our goal . . .

Our MORNING IN A CITY scented candle is hand-poured and made of a blend of soy and beeswax with a cotton wick in our custom white porcelain jar with lid/base. It is available at Williams College Museum and at our Hudson, NY and on-line store for $58. (6oz. / 40hr burn rate)

Summer Heat in the SOUTHWEST

Christopher Draghi

As the summer heats up its final stages before yielding to cooler temperatures of autumn, we embrace the raw beauty of the American desert. From the pale yellow foothills of greater Phoenix to the burnt orange, natural monuments of Sedona, you are transported along with the sizzling, dry breezes from stark desert to painted landscapes of red rock country. A shift in the air marks your passage from the spiced dried earth of the Sonoran hills to the sweet and herbaceous scents emanating from sagebrush river beds of the Coconino canyons. It's a dramatic transformation of color and composition, of a state of anxious solitude to a solemn spirituality. Each with its own beauty and purpose that compose this awe-inspiring region of complimentary contrasts.

Our SOUTHWEST fragrance pays homage to this unique region. The arid, kilned earth of powdery red clay and brittle, dried wood inspires the base of the fragrance where spicy notes of fennel seed, coriander and black pepper add layers of intrigue.

Fragrance of Summer

Carmel beach

There's no denying a certain sense serenity that descends upon you as you arrive in central coast California, leaving the denser populations of the Southern Californian cities and towns in the rearview mirror, with destination northward towards Big Sur, and beyond.

The maritime breezes that sweep from the boundless Pacific, across the winding PCH, shaping the rolling hills, carry with them light briny notes. They blend effortlessly with the gentile notes of the golden grasses, wild sage and magnificent wind swept cypresses that dot the dramatic coastline.

With longer daylight hours and vacation days upon us, brighter scents add to the joy that the summer season brings.  Our PACIFIC COAST fragrance is an homage to the season and the magical coastal landscape that inspired it.
